Case Study – Mix of methods for the healthcare market

How the Berlin Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians is mastering the challenge of e-health.

The Challenge

Understanding of heterogeneous target groups

Everyone is talking about e-health and the associated changes to the way in which every German citizen has access to (digital) healthcare. But how exactly is digitalization taking shape in the healthcare market?

Healthcare professionals, medical assistants and service providers must meet the new challenges of digitalization.

At the same time, patients experience the use of the digital health card and participation in video consultations in different ways.

The Goal

Ideal communication for all areas

A look at all sides and positions should enable us to gain an all-encompassing understanding of the current needs and challenges in the e-health market.

The very heterogeneous group of doctors, medical assistants, service providers, patients and experts requires an approach that leaves a clear picture and brings all perspectives to the digital table.

For this reason, a mix of methods was chosen that allows comprehensive findings to be gathered from all stakeholders.

the solution

Three-stage evaluation concept for meaningful validation & consolidation of content

KV Berlin - E-Health Videosprechstunde
  • Stage 1: Quantitative online survey of more than 1,200 practicing physicians (specialist and GP practices) and psychotherapists from Berlin to validate the status quo.

  • Stage 2: Qualitative online in-depth interviews with a total of 40 service providers, medical assistants and patients from Berlin to capture all perspectives.

  • Stage 3: Qualitative online in-depth interviews with experts from the healthcare sector (e.g. gematics, insurers, patient representatives) throughout Germany in order to obtain a classification of the expert perspective.

Key facts

What we have achieved

  • The comprehensive and methodologically diverse study design made it possible to gain differentiated insights into the utilization, acceptance and need for support in relation to e-health services in Berlin

  • Overall, e-health services are meeting with more interest and acceptance than one might think. Many people just don’t know what tasks they will be faced with and are worried about a high level of bureaucracy

  • Through good and especially transparent communication, the Berlin Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians can significantly increase the willingness to use digital tools – alongside the e-prescriptions that have been mandatory since January 2014

  • However, the need for optimization of the existing infrastructure is high – the Berlin Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians has received various insights for concrete measures to meet the existing needs

  • Sanctions and fee cutbacks as a means of moving doctors’ offices towards e-health are more likely to cause frustration than cooperation. However, if the practices are involved in the process, their willingness is significantly higher

  • While video consultations, online appointments and digital health applications are becoming increasingly popular, treatment pathways such as telemonitoring and AI-supported diagnoses are rather unknown or not widely used

  • We have outlined specific recommendations for communicating with patients and creating patient-friendly brochures and content so that the acceptance and utilization frequency of e-health services continues to increase among the population
